What is the process for starting a career in real estate sales?

The first step is to become a Sales Agent.  "The Sales Agent license is an entry-level license that allows individuals to acquire on-the-job training and experience while they complete the requirements for an Associate Broker license.   Sales Agents may perform all brokerage services specifically authorized by the designated broker of the agency with which the Sales Agent is affiliated."*

To obtain a Sales Agent license, you must complete (with a minimum grade of 75%) a 55-hour qualifying education Sales Agent Course. You must also pass the state Promissor Sales Agent examination within one year of course completion. Within one year of passing the state exam, you must affiliate with a licensed real estate agency.  The Sales Agent license is a two-year license. It is not renewable.  Within those two-years, you must upgrade your license to an Associate Broker by passing The Associate Broker Course.

Licensing requirements changed. If you received a sales agent license prior to July 1, 2006, and did not take a state exam (under the old rules) you must pass the state Sales Agent Examination in order to receive your Associate Broker's license.

The Maine Real Estate Commission has been posting Frequently Asked Questions on their website during the transition period.

Inactive for more than 4 years, but less than 6; 36 clock hours are required. You also have the option of passing the Maine Law exam instead of taking the courses.

Why aren't the specific locations of the courses listed?

We don't include class locations because locations change.  Also, we need to know how many people want to attend.   If we post locations, we will have walk-ins that we're not expecting and therefore we may not have enough chairs, handouts, etc.   Locations and directions are mailed to students upon registration.
